Ils ont été sidérés par la présence de l'arbre, saisis par le jeu des temporalités de ce passeur entre le monde chtonien et le monde ouranien. Ils ont éprouvé l'admiration, mais aussi l'horreur, inspirés par ce végétal souverain. Presque tous ont guetté, écouté, la parole de l'arbre. Certains ont espéré profiter de ses messages, en faire leur mentor, engager un dialogue avec lui. D'autres, plus rares lui ont déclaré leur amour.
L'objet de ce livre est de suivre depuis l'Antiquité gréco-romaine ceux qui ont su « voir l'arbre » : Horace et Virgile, mais aussi Ronsard et La Fontaine. Par la suite, Rousseau, Goethe, Novalis et, en France, Chateaubriand, Senancour, Maurice de Guérin, avant Verhaeren, Proust, Francis Ponge et Yves Bonnefoy. Bien entendu, il y eut aussi des peintres. Autant de sensations et d'émotions qui ont suscité des pratiques : s'étendre sous les ombrages, s'y délasser, y méditer, s'enfouir dans le végétal, s'y réfugier, y grimper constituent autant de comportements répondant à des pulsions profondes.
À l'époque contemporaine, certains ont tenté d'incruster leur corps dans l'écorce, en espérant que le végétal ferait croître l'empreinte. À l'extrême, des moribonds ont souhaité que leur ADN soit transmis à l'arbre planté sur leur tombe. On le voit, c'est à une longue promenade que ce livre invite, à la rencontre de l'arbre champêtre, de l'arbre haie, de l'arbre isolé et sauvage comme de l'arbre domestique.
Il s'agit ici de l'histoire des émotions éprouvées par des individus qui, au fil des siècles, possédaient la rhétorique pour les dire.

Plus de glorification des faits d'armes, mais l'omniprésence de la mort et le tableau de l'Apocalypse. Le livre est interdit. Il deviendra un film mythique, que les autorités allemandes essaieront d'interdire également. Mais la puissance d'évocation de cette ouvre est telle qu'elle résiste à toute censure. Elle incarne si justement la bêtise et la cruauté infinies des hommes qu'on pense forcément au désastre des conflits suivants, à la marque indélébile laissée aux survivants. Ecrit à la première personne, au présent, avec une sobriété qui souligne l'horreur quotidienne du front et de la vie dans les tranchées, ce roman nous interpelle du fin fond de l'enfer, dans la plus déchirante intimité.
